As a consumer, what bugs you the most? Faulty appliances, hidden charges on phone bills, extended warranties? If you live in Kansas, you'd be likely to answer "car insurance." Kansas recently released the state's 2003 Consumer Ratio Report, showing that 38% of complaints related to auto insurance, more than any other line of business. During 2003, the Kansas Insurance Department (KID) closed 5,219 complaints involving insurance companies. Accident and health insurance followed closely behind with 29% of the complaints. Homeowners insurance accounted for 18 percent of complaints, while life, HMO, long-term care and annuity insurance all had ratios in the single digits. Sixty-four percent of the total complaints dealt with problems relating to claims handling, according to the report. Other problem areas were underwriting (17%), policyholder services (15%) and marketing and sales (4%). Claims handling problems were identified as unsatisfactory claim settlement/offer (43%); denial of the claim (26%); and claim delays (24%).
